How He's in the Game
In 2006, Ryan Zimmerman established the ziMS Foundation, which works to spread awareness of multiple sclerosis and raise money for programs benefiting those affected by MS. Zimmerman faced the difficulties of MS firsthand when his mother was diagnosed in 1995. Speaking about his work with MS, Zimmerman says, “It’s not just for my mom. It’s for everyone.”
The ziMS Foundation works closely with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and has hosted three annual golf tournaments in Virginia Beach, Zimmerman’s hometown, to raise funds for work towards a cure. Zimmerman is on the board of the MS Society’s National Capital Area Chapter. In support of their Kidventure program, for children who have a parent with MS, he has invited members to the ballpark and met with the kids. He recently donated $10,000 to the YMCA of Arlington, VA to provide Adaptive Yoga for the Nervous System, which helps those suffering from neurological diseases.
Zimmerman is also involved in the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, assisting with their children's health, education and recreation programs. He has served as a representative for the Stop on Red campaign against red light running, held youth clinics with the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society, participated in a charity date auction for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and visited with blood donors at the American Red Cross. Zimmerman also donated $250,000 to the Athletics Department at the University of Virginia, his alma mater, for improvements to their baseball program.
