How He's in the Game
Nnamdi Asomugha uses his time off the field to help the communities that paved the way for him: by donating backpacks to kids at his former high school in Los Angeles and outfitting the Narbonne High basketball and football teams with shoes.
In Oakland, Asomugha centers his community efforts around the East Oakland Youth Development Center. He provides shoes and clothing to students, hosts fly fishing outings, brings in high achievers from the Center for an annual academic celebration at the Raiders headquarters and takes a group on a college tour each year. Every high school graduate who has participated in a tour has gone on to a higher education institution.
Former President Bill Clinton hosted Asomugha at the 2009 meeting of Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) to help spread the word about his efforts in Nigeria. Asomugha is the Advisory Board Chair of an organization dedicated to eradicating problems in Nigeria. OWIN (the Orphans and Widows in Need Foundation) provides food, shelter, medicine, vocational training, literacy training, and scholarships to widows and orphans victimized by poverty or abuse in Nigeria.
