How He's in the Game

Since he joined the Tigers, Magglio Ordóñez has committed a great deal of his time and financial resources to the Detroit community.Ordóñez regularly donates tickets to Little League teams from southwest Detroit and money to support renovations of key facilities. He established a scholarship fund for Southwest Detroit graduating seniors. In 2008, Ordóñez’s efforts were recognized when he received the Roberto Clemente Award. Ordóñez established the Ordóñez Family Scholarship, a permanently endowed college scholarship benefiting a graduating high school senior from southwest Detroit. In addition, Ordóñez has pledged to personally donate at least $100,000 each year to support the Detroit community.

Ordóñez sponsors Hispanic youth during the Fiesta Tigres! celebration, which honors the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino players to the game of baseball. Ordóñez and his wife additionally raised over $10,000 for the Detroit Tigers Foundation by volunteering as celebrity servers at a local Starbucks. Ordóñez is active in the Tigers Dreams Come True program, which grants the wishes of fans facing life-threatening illnesses by treating them to live viewing of batting practice at the stadium.

About Magglio Ordóñez


Magglio Ordóñez was born in 1974 in Caracas, Venezuela. He was acquired in 1997 by the Chicago White Sox, and since 2005 he has played for the Detroit Tigers. Over the last decade, Ordóñez has been a tremendously successful batter – in 2007 he led the American League in both doubles and batting average. He has won the Silver Slugger Award (awarded to the best batter in baseball) three times (in 2000, 2002 and 2007) and has been voted to the All-Star Team six times (in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2007).
