How He's in the Game

John Baker is one of the most consistent and enthusiastic contributors to the Florida Marlins philanthropic efforts. He has instructed youth baseball clinics, visited local children’s hospitals, and hosted children with life-threatening illnesses. He’s even toured Iraq and Kuwait as part of a Marlins effort to boost military morale, a trip that was both eye-opening and inspiring. Since then, he’s reached out on his own to seek opportunities to support the troops and their families. He cofounded the Marlins Letters to Troops Program with teammate Chris Coghlan, which encourages fans to write thank you notes to soldiers abroad. In addition to his work with the armed forces, he has stepped up to help out with the Marlins’ Homes for Haiti Program, traveling to the ravaged island nation to participate in relief efforts. Reflecting upon his service work, Baker says, “I am pushing as hard as I can to give back as much as I can, because these experiences have taught me so much. Sometimes as players we are so concerned with wins and losses that we forget to take a broader view of our surrounding community, I hope to never make that mistake again."
