Volunteer Opportunities

By volunteering with one of our high-quality beneficiaries, you can help us reach our goal of 20,000 plays in 2009 and help these programs thrive.

Sacred Heart Nativity Schools

Tutor: during after school hours, during Saturday schools and at camp in the summer

BAWSI

Activity Leader: afterschool fitness and motivational volunteer for 3rd-5th grade girls.  Minimum 2hrs/week for 8 weeks at an elementary program in the Bay Area.

Downtown College Preparatory


Tutor: For remedial courses including literacy, math, science, English and history.  Also available, computer skill enhancement or assisting in the college guidance resource library.

Guest Speaker: Talk about the benefits of a college education and various career options. Fingerprinting and TB testing is required.

Shelter Network

Children’s Activity Leader: supervise, interact and provide playtime activities for homeless children at one of our four family shelters.  Volunteers may design original activities using playroom materials or lead an activity planned by the Children’s Coordinator.


Tutor: assist the children in our programs with their schoolwork once or twice a week in the late afternoon.


Community Party Leader: lift spirits by leading or sponsoring a Birthday Party, Game or Movie Night, Holiday Party or Picnic & Games at a local Park. 


Weekend Meal Volunteers: provide (and serve when possible) a dinner for 70 – 75 people at the Maple Street Shelter. Check out the Maple Street On-line Calendar and Sign-up form: Go to www.ShelterNetwork.org, click “Participate.”


Donation Sorting: sort through donations that come in daily


Life Skill/Resume Building: help teach life skills, resume building and interview skills to the residents of Shelter Network.  These include basic banking techniques, nutrition, budgeting as well as help with creating a resume, interview skills and how to dress for success.

Summer Search

Career Advisor: as part of the Career Advisory Network (CAN) professionals meet with Summer Search alumni for information interviews.  Provide career-specific guidance and teach the “soft skills” necessary to help alumni navigate their job search and ultimately find a satisfying career. CAN is currently available in the 3 San Francisco Bay Area, Boston and New York City offices.

Jeremiah’s Promise

Current volunteer opportunities: Mentoring youth or families, Life Skill Presenters, Handymen, Fundraising, Administrative Assistance, Gardening, or Taking youth to sporting or cultural events.

Mural Music and Art Project

BUILD

BUILD Mentor: Become a mentor for a youth business team and make a real difference in the lives of talented and entrepreneurial teenagers. Commitment: 1.5 hours/week  Time: 5:30 - 7:00 PM November through May.


Business Plan Competition Judge: View up to four student business plan presentations, provide input, and evaluate the business for presentation skills, business knowledge and feasibility. Commitment:  One weekday evening if judging a practice competition, one Saturday morning or afternoon if judging the final competition of the year.  Time: February, March, April or May


Venture Capital Judge:  Participate in BUILD’s Venture Capital Advisory Program (VCAP) by meeting with youth business teams once per quarter to release start-up capital (provided by BUILD), monitor the team’s progress, and provide fiduciary guidance. Commitment: 4-6 hours/quarter.  Time: September to May.

KIPP

Guest Lecture: share with students career/university path as part of a lunchtime speaker series


Shadow: let a KIPPster shadow you for a day on the job/at university


Tutor: from 5-6pm at KIPP (in San Jose or San Francisco) during the week, or at bimonthly Saturday sessions at 11am


Lead Saturday School: at 9am lead enrichment elective connected to a hobby or interest
